Incoming Sen. Erwin Tulfo Speaks on Vote for Senate Presidency in 20th Congress
ERWIN TULFO – The Senator-elect admitted his support to Senate President Chiz Escudero in retaining the leadership in the upper chamber.
The Senate is about to enter the 20th Congress. The winners of the 2025 Senatorial Elections will join the existing senators in the upper chamber. Six (6) candidates from the Marcos-backed Alyansa Para Sa Pagbabago won the recent polls.
Five (5) senatorial candidates endorsed by Vice Pres. Sara Duterte won the 2025 senatorial polls — senators elect Christopher “Bong” Go, Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Imee Marcos, Camille Villar, and Rodante Marcoleta. They are expected to form the “Duterte bloc” in the upper chamber.
Two (2) returning senators who were neither endorsed by the Alyansa nor Vice Pres. Duterte also made it into the Senate Magic 12. They are senator-elect Bam Aquino who ranked second in the results of the 2025 Midterm Elections and senator-elect Kiko Pangilinan who ranked 5th.
Amid the upcoming transition of the Senate to the 20th Congress, there are different talks about the next Senate president of the upper chamber and the possibility that Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero will remain in his position.
Previously, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero affirmed that he is open to be the Senate president in the 20th Congress. Incoming senator Tito Sotto also confirmed that there are people convincing him to be the next Senate president. According to the senator-elect who was the Senate president of the 18th Congress, some people came to him and assured him of their peers’ support.
Incoming senator Erwin Tulfo previously claimed that he will talk to his brother, Sen. Raffy Tulfo, over the Senate presidency. According to him, he and his brother should agree on who to give their support to.
Recently, senator-elect Erwin Tulfo revealed that he and his brother, Sen. Raffy Tulfo, will vote for Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero. Based on a report on Inquirer, he stressed their being part of the “majority” as the reason behind their decision.
“We’re the majority, so we’ll vote for the majority. Because the majority usually gets a directive to help the administration. So there’s no longer opposing views, right? We’re majority. I am with Alyansa so it’s kind of expected that I’ll be with the majority,” senator-elect Erwin Tulfo said.
Based on the report, the incoming Senator is not sure if he and his brother are already included in the 13 senators who allegedly back Escudero as per Sen. Joel Villanueva. Previously, senator-elect Erwin Tulfo also expressed his belief that the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte should proceed in the 20th Congress.
