MARTIN ROMUALDEZ – The House Speaker called for respect for the decision of Senate President Chiz Escudero over the impeachment process of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.
Vice Pres. Sara Duterte who is currently in The Hague for scheduled visits to former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte is faced with a looming impeachment trial. However, recently, there were speculations about the alleged “no trial scenario”.

The speculations that the impeachment trial of the Vice President may not be pushed through came after the changes in the schedule of the impeachment trial proceedings against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. Instead of having it yesterday, June 2, the presentation of the articles of impeachment is moved to June 11.
According to Escudero, the House and the Senate have legislative agenda to fulfill. He claimed that there are still several measures that they must work on to make it to the 19th Congress which will adjourn on June 14.

Furthermore, the Senate President also claimed that the Commission on Appointments still has over 270 appointments to review. Escudero stressed that the “Senate plenary is supreme” on “no trial” speculations. Recently, House Speaker Martin Romualdez reacted to the delay of the impeachment proceedings against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.

Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives last February 5. The lower chamber is under the lead of presidential cousin and House Speaker Martin Romualdez for three (3) years now and the Speaker is poised to remain in his seat.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Speaker stressed that the complaint is already under the discretion of the upper chamber.
“’Yung mga impeachment complaint ay nasa Senado na. So we leave it to their sound discretion as to how they want to proceed and conduct. The Senate President outlined the priority measures like the LEDAC measures that they would like to prioritize first. So, we have to respect the decision of the Senate President and the Senate,” he said.
Based on the report, House Speaker Martin Romualdez also gave his take on the “no trial scenario” speculation following the changes in the schedule of the impeachment proceedings against Duterte. According to Romualdez, “everything is speculative at this point”.
