CHELSEA MANALO NATIONAL COSTUME – The PH bet was stunning and here are some details of what she wore.
Filipina beauty queen Chelsea Manalo was stunning and excellent during the preliminary competition of Miss Universe 2024. This part of the competition took place on November 14 (the 15th in the Philippines) and the delegates strut the stage with their national costumes and swimsuits.
One of the highlights was her national costume. It was a gold dress with white sleeves matched with a silver and gold headpiece. She carried two fans as she walked the stage reminiscent of what is used in the Philippine Muslim ethnic dance – full of grace and elegance in each sway and soft moves.
The dress had a bright blue train with an image of the Virgin Mary. It is called “Hiraya”, a Tagalog word that signifies “hope” and “aspiration”. Since this year’s pageant is in Mexico, the dress showed the centuries-old bond between the Philippines and Mexico particularly their shared belief in religion.
“This National Costume is a symbolism of the far and profound history and relationship between the Philippines and Mexico,” says Bulacan-born designer Manny Halasan, the creator of the costume.
The costume, through the design, showed Christianity and Islam, both religions embraced by the country and shaped our culture. The details included Tongkaling bells from Mindanao symbolizing blessings, traditional fabric Inaul from Sultan Kudarat, and Puni art.
It was a piece reflecting the soul, faith, resilience, and the connection between cultures of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, a couple of days ahead of the 73rd edition of the pageant, Mia Le Roux of South Africa withdrew. According to the official statement, this difficult decision was made to prioritize her health. She backed out to focus on her health and recovery, the topmost priority of their team.
The statement said, “It is with deep regret that we share the news that Mia Le Roux, Miss South Africa 2024, has had to withdraw from the Miss Universe competition due to health concerns.”
