MIKEY BUSTOS – The famous content creator-actor has discovered a new ant species from his backyard and was credited for it.

Filipino-Canadian content creator and actor Mikey Bustos happily shared in a post an achievement he unlocked. It was a scientific breakthrough as he was able to make a scientific discovery.

In his post, he shared that a couple of years ago, he shared that he has found these strange-looking ants in his backyard. He described them as “really cool red and black ant with peach fuzz and spines on its back, that I hadn’t ever seen before.”

For this, he was recognized for discovering a new ant species.

On Instagram, he shared this good news and narrated the story. Accordingly, after seeing the ants, he then sent it to his myrmecologist friend Dr. Dave General for testing. His friend is an ant taxonomist from the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

After the tests, it was found that the ant was a Meranoplus bicolor, a species that is not known to exist in the country.

These ants live in bare lands, grasslands, and sparse forests. They are active all day and scavenge for food. They feed on small animals and insects and other insects actually avoid them because of their toxic hair.

And on September 9, Saturday, he received a piece of great news about being credited for being able to discover this type of ant that he is now raising a colony of.

“I was surprised to find out today as I was doing more research on the species, that I’ve been credited for the geographical scientific discovery of the ant, which I am now raising a colony of, for the Philippines. So cool!” he added.

This species is officially the 555th and he wants to name it Species #555 and quipped, “It’s amazing what one might find lurking in our own backyards, if only more people took the time to look.”

Mikey is passionate about ants. He is actually the founder of AntsCanada, an organization that promotes awareness and habitat conservation of ants.
