Female Teacher Expresses Pain After Some Students Use Rusty Milk Cans as Lunch Containers
A female teacher felt saddened after discovering that some of her students were using rusty milk cans as containers for their packed rice.
Recently, Shyrdene Kate Mantalaba Santander shared photos showing several of her students using old milk cans as containers for their packed rice during lunchtime. The post quickly gained attention on social media.
According to the teacher, she noticed a few students carrying milk cans that had previously been distributed to them. Curious about what was inside, she decided to take a closer look. To her surprise, the cans were being used as lunch containers for their rice.

While the children saw the cans as a practical way to carry their food, the teacher immediately noticed that many of them were already covered in rust. She became worried because rusty containers are no longer safe for storing food and may pose health risks.
The teacher explained that the students were not intentionally using the cans in an unsafe way. They simply did not know that the containers could be harmful. For many of them, the cans were available and easy to use, making them a convenient option for bringing food to school.

Wanting to protect the children, the teacher advised them not to use the rusty cans anymore. As a temporary alternative, she suggested wrapping their rice in banana leaves instead.

Seeing our pupils use rusty milk cans as food containers made me realize that there are still many children in the countryside who grow up with very little, yet they continue to come to school, learn, and do their best with what they have.
Sometimes, we complain about the small things in life without realizing how blessed we already are. A simple meal, a safe container for our food, clean water, comfortable clothes, and the opportunity to study are already privileges that not every child gets to experience.
Moments like this teach me to appreciate what I have and to be more compassionate toward children who are less fortunate. It is a reminder that gratitude is not just about being thankful for having more, but also about recognizing how much we already have compared to what others have to live without.”
