On June 10, 2026, Vhinic became a victim of a phishing scam. He admitted that he made a mistake that allowed fraudsters to gain access to his information. He immediately contacted the bank for assistance.

The account holder said he called the bank as soon as he discovered the suspicious activity. At the time, the unauthorized transaction was reportedly still pending and had not yet been completed. He asked the bank to block the transaction to prevent loss.

The male netizen claimed that he was informed that nothing could be done until the merchant processed or approved the charge. After the transaction pushed through, he was advised to file a dispute. Marquez said he submitted dispute requests three times, but all of them were denied.

The disputed charge involved an international transaction worth $5,000, equivalent to more than P375,000. He said he was left shocked that he could still be held responsible for such a large amount despite reporting the issue immediately.

Marquez also questioned why the transaction was not flagged by the bank’s fraud detection system. He pointed out that the purchase used an international address, while his previous transactions had always been linked to his local address.

Marquez is now hoping that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will look into similar cases and help strengthen safeguards for consumers against online fraud and unauthorized transactions.
