Alan Peter Cayetano is ready to oppose PBBM’s SONA
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano is prepared to give his counter-speech this Tuesday, following President Marcos’ fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27, 2026.
The “kontra-SONA” is a traditional Senate practice allowing minority legislators to counter the President’s official State of the Nation Address.
During a Friday afternoon Facebook Live broadcast, Cayetano crowdsourced topics from his social media followers for his upcoming “kontra-SONA” speech.
He suggested transforming the acronym “SONA” into “SANA,” which represents “stewarding a national agenda,” while advocating for national unity over divisive partisan politics, based on the report from The Philippine Star.
Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian anticipates that President Marcos will address inflation and sluggish economic growth in his upcoming remarks. Interviewed on dzBB on Friday, Gatchalian linked the slow economy to reduced infrastructure spending, which he blamed on recent flood control complications.
He noted that while the President’s upcoming remarks remain unpredictable, especially following last year’s sharp “Mahiya naman kayo” warning to corrupt officials and contractors, efforts to target those involved in the massive public works corruption scheme have shown tangible progress.
“What’s important is that it won’t happen again. That is where I’m concerned. When the people forget, it will repeat. So, reforms and processes in the system are important,” Gatchalian stressed.
Meanwhile, in a previous report, Senator Ping Lacson stated that Lino Cayetano, the brother of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, is ready to assist the investigation into an alleged anomalous project in Taguig City. Allegedly, Sen. Cayetano was involved in this.
Lacson had this allegation against Cayetano when the latter questioned the sudden rise in the former’s Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN). The former police chief stressed that while he was not in politics after the 2022 elections, he ventured into the real estate business, which was the source of his profits.
