Police Prevents Student w/ Handgun From Entering School in South Cotabato

A 16-year-old student who was found carrying a handgun was stopped before he could enter a public school in Tupi, South Cotabato.

On Tuesday (July 7, 2026), the police authorities prevented a potentially dangerous situation after they stopped a student carrying a firearm.

A local government employee noticed the student carrying what appeared to be a firearm while walking along the National Highway in Barangay Poblacion. Concerned about the safety of students and residents, the employee immediately informed authorities, prompting a quick response from the police.

Officers located and intercepted the student before he reached the school grounds. During the operation, police recovered a Glock 17 9mm pistol and two magazines containing a total of 32 rounds of ammunition.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm was an issued service weapon belonging to the student’s older brother, who is an active member of the Philippine Army assigned to the 6th Infantry Battalion under the 6th Infantry Division.

Authorities said the minor had taken the handgun without his brother’s knowledge or permission.

The student explained that he brought the firearm because he wanted protection for himself. Police, however, stressed that bringing a weapon to a school poses serious risks and could endanger many lives.

The young man was referred to the Women and Children Protection Desk and later turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for proper intervention and assistance. Authorities are also preparing charges for an alleged violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

“The timely report from a concerned citizen made all the difference. It shows that public vigilance and immediate reporting can help prevent incidents before lives are put at risk,” PNP chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. Said.

Police officials said the swift action of responding officers helped prevent a situation that could have placed students, teachers, and school staff at risk.
