Monterrazas De Cebu Project Of Slater Young Will Not Be Stopped

Slater Young’s Monterrazas De Cebu did not solely cause the flooding in Cebu.

The Cebu City Council is moving to lift the cease-and-desist order (CDO) on the Monterrazas de Cebu project linked to Slater Young.

The Monterrazas de Cebu project is a luxury hillside development in Cebu City. It is largely linked to Slater Young, and this project is being pointed to as one of the main reasons behind the severe and catastrophic flooding in the nearby towns when Typhoon Tino hit the country.

Slater has been all-out in promoting the project and prides it as the first in the country, offering a unique blend of indoor–outdoor living and city–mountain lifestyle. Based on the design, this is being built on a mountain slope. However, environmental concerns were raised.

While he was all loud and proud of this project, he fell silent when the severe flooding happened that killed many. Previously, charges for the violation of Section 77 of Presidential Decree 705, or the Revised Forestry Code, were filed. Section 77 of the Revised Forestry Code penalizes the unlawful cutting, gathering, collecting, removing, or possessing of timber and other forest products.

Recently, despite the calls for the construction to be stopped to prevent further impact, the Cebu City Council moved to lift the cease-and-desist order (CDO) previously imposed on the controversial project. This has signaled a shift in its earlier stance on the upscale development.

The council approved a resolution to lift the CDO that stopped construction in Barangay Guadalupe, saying they needed to reassess the project. This decision highlights the need to balance development and environmental protection.

Authorities are expected to keep monitoring the project to ensure all permits and safety measures are followed.

“The imposition of a Cease-and-Desist Order on the Monterrazas de Cebu project is not warranted, without prejudice to the continued monitoring and regulatory authority of the concerned offices,” the resolution said.
