Netizen Calls Attention Over Alleged Wrong Computation of Senior Citizen Discount

Netizen Expresses Concern Over Alleged Wrong Computation of Senior Citizen Discount at Restaurant

A male netizen raised concern over the alleged incorrect computation of a senior citizen discount at a restaurant.

Recently, Wilson Salas, a Facebook user, posted the receipt from a restaurant located along Roxas Boulevard. The concern quickly spread online after a photo of the receipt was shared on social media

Salas called the attention of Mayor Isko and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) regarding the supposed wrong computation of the senior citizen discount given by the restaurant.

In his post, he pointed out that the discount given to two senior citizens in their group seemed smaller than what it should have been based on the total bill.

According to Wilson, their group had a total bill of 5,009 pesos. Among the five people who dined at the restaurant, two were senior citizens who were supposed to receive the benefits provided under the law.

In the Philippines, senior citizens are entitled to a 20 percent discount and exemption from the 12 percent value-added tax for certain purchases, especially when dining in restaurants.

The customer explained that based on his own computation, each senior citizen’s share of the bill should have received a discount of around P320. For two senior citizens, the total discount should have been about P640.

However, the receipt reportedly showed that only P240 was deducted as the discount for both seniors.

Because of this difference, Wilson felt that the amount charged might not have followed the correct computation. He then called on Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and the Department of Trade and Industry to look into the matter and review how the restaurant calculated the discount.

“Calling Mayor Isko and DTI to investigate the Emerald Restaurant at roxas blvd. how they compute the 20% and 12% discount accorded to 2 Senior Citizen 240 only. when the correct computation should be 320 each x 2 senior citizen of the 5 clients. 5009 bills. 320×2= 640= 4360 only. Tnx”
