Why Ruby Rodriguez Walked Away From Fame for a New Life in America
RUBY RODRIGUEZ – After decades in the spotlight, Ruby Rodriguez finally revealed the deeply personal reason behind her move to the United States.
Veteran host and comedienne Ruby Rodriguez has opened up about one of the most life-changing decisions she has ever made, leaving the Philippines and stepping away from a flourishing showbiz career to move to the United States.
In a heartfelt interview with journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdes on the latter’s YouTube vlog, Ruby spoke candidly about her quiet departure from the entertainment industry in 2021. For decades, she had been a familiar face on local television, particularly through her long and successful run on Eat Bulaga. However, behind the scenes, she was facing a deeply personal challenge that required her full attention as a mother.

Ruby Rodriguez revealed that her decision to relocate was centered entirely on her son AJ’s health and educational needs. AJ is currently undergoing treatment in the United States for a rare autoimmune disease. In addition to his medical condition, he also has intellectual disability, which requires specialized learning support.
“I left in 2021. It’s for my son kasi nga he is being treated here in the US for a rare autoimmune disease. And then let’s face it mas maganda ang special education dito because my son’s also special, he has intellectual disability. So dito ’yung school nila talagang tututukan nila, and they have a special school and they are all special students,” she relayed.
For Ruby, the choice became clear. While her career had brought her success and recognition, her son’s well-being and access to better healthcare and education had to come first. She emphasized the importance of focused care and specialized programs that could address AJ’s unique needs, resources that were more accessible in the US.
Now based in California, Ruby is married to a Filipino-American and has shifted her professional path. She currently works at the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles, balancing her role in public service with being a hands-on mother.
Though she may no longer be in the local spotlight, Ruby shared that she has no regrets about her decision. For her, family will always take priority above all else.
