Authorities Remind Filipinos Against Love Scams
Authorities are reminding Filipinos to stay alert against the rising number of love scams as Valentine’s Day draws near.
Scam Watch Pilipinas and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center have stepped up their campaign to protect the public, especially those who are active on dating apps and social media.
During a recent awareness drive, the groups explained that scammers are now using modern technology to make their schemes more convincing. Some are taking advantage of artificial intelligence to create fake photos, scripted conversations, and even realistic video calls.

These tools make it harder to tell if a person online is real or not, especially for those who are emotionally invested.
According to investigators, scammers often target adults who are looking for foreign partners, financially stable professionals, solo parents, and people who are more emotionally vulnerable. At first, the conversation may seem harmless and even romantic.
Over time, the scammer builds trust and emotional attachment, making the victim feel special and understood.

Once trust is established, the scammer may start asking for personal information. This can include copies of identification cards, financial details, or even private photos and videos. In some cases, these materials are later used for blackmail, with the victim being threatened and asked to send money to avoid embarrassment or harm.
Authorities remind the public to be cautious when talking to strangers online, no matter how friendly or sincere they may appear. It is important to avoid sharing personal details, sending money, or providing private photos to someone you have not met and verified in real life.
Taking time to check profiles and being mindful of red flags can help prevent falling victim to these scams.
The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity as soon as possible. Incidents related to online scams can be reported through the National Anti-Scam Hotline 1326.
