DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara Assets He Serves at the Pleasure of Marcos Jr.

SONNY ANGARA – The Department of Education(DepEd) Chief broke his silence on the rumored extensive revamp of the Marcos Jr. administration.

Following the New Year message of President Bongbong Marcos wherein he called on Filipinos to continue the journey with hope and a clear direction, the Cabinet of the current administration is faced with a rumor of a supposed extensive revamp.

Marcos Jr. is mum over the rumored revamp of his administration amid the flood control issue in the government. The supposed multi-billion flood control corruption tagged several congressmen and officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Some senators and former senators were also implicated in the issue.

The flood control issue even urged thousands of Filipinos to join the “Trillion Peso March” and call for accountability. Two (2) big rallies were held in 2025 over the supposed multi-billion flood control corruption.

Even Pres. Bongbong Marcos himself was tagged to the flood control mess by former House Budget Appropriations Committee chairman Zaldy Co. The former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative also mentioned former Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin and who was replaced with now E.S. Ralph Recto after the issue broke out.

Recently, DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara broke his silence on the rumored revamp that currently surrounds the Marcos Jr. admin. Based on a report on PhilStar, he cited the information he allegedly got from Executive Sec. Ralph Recto.

“Not the President, but Executive Secretary (Ralph Recto) said there is none. Then the Presidential Management Staff secretary also told me there is none,” Angara said.

Based on the report, aside from DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara, Malacañang press officer undersecretary Claire Castro also claimed that there would be no changes in the Marcos Jr. Cabinet for now. Her statement was reiterated by the education Chief.

“Hopefully we are not included… and of course, we are also grateful to the statement made by Undersecretary Claire Castro, clarifying that there is no such thing,” the DepEd Secretary said.

On the first week of the year, the country operated on a reenacted budget. It was only last January 5 when Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. signed the 2026 national budget. The country’s fund for this year amounts to P6.79 trillion.

However, shortly after the President approving the 2026 national budget, Mamamayang Liberal Partylist Representative Leila de Lima and House Senior Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Edgar Erice filed a petition questioning the constitutionality of the unprogrammed appropriations under the 2026 budget. The challenge came even after the President rejected 7 out of 10 UAs.

Recently, Senate Pres. Tito Sotto spoke on the petition challenging the constitutionality of the UAs in the 2026 national budget.
