Kathryn Bernardo Stunned After Discovering Mom Min’s Secret Role in MMFF Hit ‘Unmarry’
KATHRYN BERNARDO – Kapamilya star Kathryn Bernardo had no idea a major surprise was waiting for her behind the scenes of one of this year’s biggest MMFF hits.
Kathryn Bernardo recently found herself pleasantly surprised after discovering that her mother, Min Bernardo, played a significant behind-the-scenes role in one of the standout films of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Unmarry. According to reports, Kathryn had no prior knowledge that her mom was among the film’s executive producers until the information surfaced publicly.
Unmarry, which stars Angelica Panganiban and Zanjoe Marudo, revolves around the stories of two individuals navigating the emotionally charged process of seeking annulment from their respective marriages. The film struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, eventually becoming one of the surprise hits of the MMFF. While Patricia Sumagui is credited as the film’s sole producer, Min Bernardo served as an executive producer alongside Atty. Joji Alonso and Gilmer Roque.

The Bernardo family recently gathered for a special screening of Unmarry at a Quezon City mall last Wednesday, December 31. It was during this time that details of Min’s involvement drew renewed attention. In a report by PEP, Min revealed that she and Kathryn never discussed her participation in the project, which led to the actress being caught completely off guard after reading a post by Atty. Joji.
“Ay, no! Hindi niya alam,” Min shared. “Nagulat nga siya, eh. Even [si] Ria [Atayde], nagulat.”
Kathryn confirmed her mother’s statement and expressed her own disbelief. “Oo! Nakakagulat siya! Nagulat nga din ako, e. Na-surprise,” she said.
Beyond the surprise, Min also spoke about the film’s performance both at the box office and during the recently concluded Gabi ng Parangal. She candidly commented on Angelica Panganiban’s Best Actress loss, saying, “So far… nanghinayang lang ako kay Angge. Well, anyway ganun talaga. May nanalo, may natatalo,” referring to the award going to I’mPerfect star Krystel Go.

Despite that, Unmarry emerged as one of the night’s biggest winners, taking home seven awards, second only to Manila’s Finest. Its accolades included Second Best Picture, Best Director for Jeffrey Jeturian, and Best Supporting Actor for Tom Rodriguez. The film also earned honors for Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Float (shared with Manila’s Finest), and the special Breakthrough Performance Award for Zack Sibug, further cementing its success at the MMFF.
