DOH Says Leptospirosis Cases in Palawan Rise to 133
The health authorities have raised concern after the number of leptospirosis cases in Palawan climbed to 133, leaving nine people dead.
The Department of Health (DOH) in Mimaropa issued a warning to residents, urging everyone to be extra cautious, especially during the rainy season when floods are common.
According to DOH Mimaropa, Puerto Princesa City recorded the highest number of cases with 42 infections and four deaths. The municipality of Roxas followed with 34 cases and one death, while Narra reported 10 cases with one fatality.

One person also died in each of the towns of Aborlan, Sofronio Española, and San Vicente. Across the entire Mimaropa region, a total of 262 cases of leptospirosis have been recorded so far, with 35 deaths reported since the start of the year.
The DOH reminded the public that leptospirosis is not only caused by rat urine but can also be contracted through contaminated floodwater. People who have waded through floods are encouraged to seek medical attention within 24 hours, especially if they develop symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, or yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Health officials emphasized that early treatment is crucial in preventing serious complications and saving lives. They also urged residents to wear protective boots when walking in flooded areas and to maintain proper hygiene to avoid infection.
