Update about Typhoon Opong in PH

Typhoon Opong hit Masbate, Samar and Leyte and caused destruction to several properties and landslide with heavy rains and strong winds.

Several areas across the Philippines are currently braving heavy rains and strong winds as severe tropical storm Opong hits the country. Storm signals and wind signals are currently up in several areas. Classes in school and government work are also suspended in several affected areas in the country.

OpongPH is expected to move westward. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA, the severe tropical storm will cross Masbate, Sibuyan Sea, southern CALABARZON, and northern MIMAROPA before it will reach the West Philippine Sea either late Friday or early Saturday.

The storm is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday afternoon. It brought heavy rains and strong winds in Masbate early today.

Based on a post of New5 on social media, Typhoon Opong brought destruction to properties in Masbate. Storm signal no. 3 is currently up in Masbate including Ticao and Burias Island.

Typhoon Opong also brought heavy rains and strong winds in Samar. Based on a post, in Barangay San Policarpo, the roofing of a covered court was damaged. It also brought damages to one gasoline station.

Opong also brought heavy rains in Leyte which resulted to a landslide along the highway in Barangay Palarao. The said affected highway connects the province to Biliran Island.

Amid the wrath of Typhoon Opong, PAGASA stated in its update that widespread and serious flooding and landslides are expected in several areas across the nation while the provinces of Samar Island, Sorsogon, Masbate, Romblon, and Mindoro are expected to experience torrential rains.

The state weather bureau advises the public to continue monitoring the updates about the severe tropical storm and to take all necessary measures to ensure safety. Currently, several areas in the Philippines are under storm signals 1, 2, 3, and 4 due to Opong.
