Senators Robin Padilla, Imee Marcos and Some Lawmakers Get 3 Senate Committee Chairmanships

ROBIN PADILLA, IMEE MARCOS – The two Senators are among those who got the most number of Senate committees to lead in the 20th Congress.

Prior to the 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) of Pres. Bongbong Marcos last July 28 (Monday), the Senate and the House of Representatives held an election to determine who will lead the legislatives chambers in the 20th Congress. Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero won the Senate presidency over Sen. Tito Sotto with a 19-5 voting.

The Duterte bloc which includes Senators Robin Padilla, Bato dela Rosa, Imee Marcos, Bong Go, Rodante Marcoleta, Mark Villar, and Camille Villar supported Escudero. Known opposition senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan also joined the Senate majority in backing Escudero for the Senate presidency.

Sen. Tito Sotto who was the Senate President during the 18th Congress was supported by the “conscience bloc” composed of veteran senators Loren Legarda, Ping Lacson, Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Sotto himself. Opposition senator Risa Hontiveros also voted for Sotto.

Following the election for Senate president, the Senate decided on the chairmanship of the different committees. There are over 23 Senate committees, thus, there are really senators who will have to lead more than one (1) committee.

Sen. Robin Padilla is one of the senators who will head three (3) Senate committees in the 20th Congress — the Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes  Committee, Cultural Communities and Muslim Affairs  Committee and Public Information and Mass Media Committee.

Presidential sister and reelected Sen. Imee Marcos is also set to lead the Cooperatives Committee, the Foreign Relations  Committee, and the Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development Committee.

Aside from senators Robin Padilla and Imee Marcos who are both members of the Duterte bloc, the Cayetano siblings in the Senate as well as another Duterte bloc member, Sen. Bong Go, also got more than one (1) Senate committee to lead in the 20th Congress.

Several senators have aired the measures they want to propose in the 20th Congress. According to Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero, he will file a bill barring relatives of public officials from being contractors and suppliers for government projects.
