Student Collapses After Being Forced by Teacher to Clean as Punishment for Being Late
A male student collapsed after being asked to clean the hallway as punishment for coming late to school.
Recently, Jalil Macatanong, a Facebook user, shared photos of his classmate who collapsed after being forced to clean the hallway as punishment for being late. The post garnered various reactions from the online community.
The student reportedly arrived at school at 8:20 AM, missing breakfast and even skipping a shower in his rush to avoid being too late. As part of a school rule for latecomers, he was told by a faculty member to wax the entire hallway on the ground floor.

No one asked him how he was or why he was late. Without hesitation, he obeyed and spent 30 minutes under the hot sun, waxing a space as big as two classrooms.
After finishing, he made his way to their classroom on the third floor. By the time he arrived, he was exhausted, his uniform soaked in sweat, and he suddenly collapsed. Their adviser quickly helped, and classmates rushed to assist.

The poor student drank several cups of water, but he was too weak to eat. They brought him to the school infirmary immediately.
The student’s family had moved from Saguiaran to Cagayan de Oro City hoping for a better life. After school each day, he sells eco bags at Cogon market to support his family. He often gets home by 10 PM, eats dinner late, washes dishes, and sleeps around 1 AM only to wake up at 5 AM for school again.

Despite everything, he never complained. He kept going, silently carrying the weight of his responsibilities, until his body finally gave in.

“I’m so upset by what happened today. A classmate was late for school, and per school policy, latecomers have to clean the campus. He arrived at 8:20 AM, having missed breakfast and even a shower because he was running so late. One of the guidance faculty immediately told him to floor wax the ground floor hallway. They didn’t ask him why he was late or if he was okay; they just gave him an order. He spent 30 minutes in direct sunlight, waxing an area the size of two classrooms! I have photos of his suffering from this.
After that, he was sent to the 3rd floor because our classroom is there. By the time he reached our classroom, his uniform was drenched, and he collapsed. Our advisory teacher quickly helped assist the situation. I immediately gave him water, he gulped down three cups! My classmates and I helped him change out of his wet clothes and tried to get him to eat, but he was too weak. We rushed him to the infirmary.
This whole situation is made even more heartbreaking by what he endures daily. He’s originally from Saguiaran, but his family moved to Cagayan de Oro City in search of opportunities. Every day right after school, he goes to Cogon to sell ecobags to help his family. He usually gets home around 10 PM, eats dinner at 11 PM, washes dishes, and finally sleeps at roughly 1 AM. That means he barely gets 5 hours of sleep a day because he has to wake up at 5 AM for school! He never told the school about his daily struggle because he didn’t want to sound lazy…”
