Man Gets Trapped in Drain While Looking for Coins in Cebu
A 39-year-old man was rescued after he got trapped in a drainage system in Cebu City while searching for coins.
Reports say the man entered the drain through an open manhole in his quest for coins. He ended up trapped nearly 500 meters from where he entered. Residents nearby heard loud banging on the manhole cover and someone shouting from inside. Knowing someone needed help, they quickly called for assistance.
Rescuers from the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office arrived and worked to safely remove the man. They had to forcibly open the steel cover to get him out. After the rescue, he was brought to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities believe the man had been searching for loose coins when he crawled deep into the drainage system and ended up in a section that was sealed shut. Unable to get out, he started making noise to attract attention.
The incident is the third reported case of someone entering a drainage system following the viral story of “Imburnal Girl,” a young woman who was found inside a drain and later received P80,000 in financial aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Following the rescue, the Cebu City government is coordinating with the DSWD to check the man’s condition and figure out what assistance he may need. Authorities are reminding the public to stay away from dangerous areas like drains, as they present serious safety risks.
The man is now safe and getting care, while the city keeps an eye on similar incidents involving people entering the drainage system.
