DepEd Says Big Changes Coming to Senior High School Core Curriculum

Big Changes Expected on Senior High School Core Curriculum, DepEd Says

The Department of Education has announced major updates to the Senior High School (SHS) core curriculum as preparations begin for the opening of School Year 2025–2026.

While discussions in Congress continue, DepEd is moving forward with the planned changes. One of the biggest adjustments is the reduction of core subjects from 15 to just 5. The revised curriculum will focus on key areas that aim to build essential life and academic skills.

These subjects include Effective Communication, Life and Career Skills, General Mathematics, General Science, and the Study of Philippine History and Society.

Unlike the previous system where most core subjects were taught for only one semester, the new setup will stretch these subjects across two semesters. This approach is designed to help students absorb lessons better while easing their academic workload.

DepEd believes that giving more time for each subject allows for deeper understanding and longer retention of lessons.

Each core subject will be taught for four hours every week. With this setup, students can expect shorter school days, which may also help reduce stress and fatigue.

These curriculum changes aim to make senior high school education more focused and manageable, while still preparing students for higher education, work, or life in general. The revised core subjects are expected to lay a stronger foundation for future learning and help students become more equipped for real-world challenges.

As these changes roll out, DepEd assures the public that it will continue to work with schools and educators to ensure a smooth transition and proper support for both teachers and students.
