Man Lost His Life in Landslide in Tupi, South Cotabato
TRAGIC ACCIDENT – A man in Bagong Buhay, Barangay Bunao, Tupi, South Cotabato tragically lost his life in a landslide.
A landslide is when a large amount of soil, rocks, and debris suddenly slide down a slope or mountain. This usually happens when the ground becomes too loose or heavy, often because of heavy rain, earthquakes, or human activities like mining or cutting down too many trees.
Landslides can happen very quickly and can be dangerous. They can destroy homes, roads, and anything in their path. People who live in hilly or mountainous areas are more at risk, especially during the rainy season.
On Tuesday afternoon, May 13, 2025, the 25-year-old victim, a fair worker from Laguilayan, Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, was buried under the soil during the sudden landslide.
According to the local disaster office in Tupi, the landslide happened around 2:00 PM after days of continuous rain in the area. The rain, combined with a localized thunderstorm, softened the ground, causing it to collapse.
It was the first time a landslide happened in that part of Barangay Bunao, surprising many residents. The heavy rainfall over the past few afternoons may have weakened the land, eventually leading to the unexpected collapse.
Local authorities quickly responded to the scene and sent a backhoe to help remove the large amount of soil. Rescue efforts were launched right away, but unfortunately, the man did not survive.
Due to the risk of more landslides, the local government decided to evacuate nearby residents and workers from the fair. It was done as a safety measure to prevent more accidents while the area is still unstable.
