A 60-year-old grandma was detained after she was caught stealing four packs of powdered milk from a convenience store in Cebu.
Theft is when someone takes something that doesn’t belong to them without asking and with no plans of giving it back. It’s basically stealing, and it’s against the law. If you take anything like money, a phone, or even a small item from a store without the owner’s permission, and you intend to keep it, that’s considered theft.
People caught stealing can face serious consequences like fines, arrest, or even jail time, depending on what was taken and the situation.

Last Friday (April 4, 2025), Inayawan Police arrested an elderly woman identified as alias Cherry for stealing powdered milk from a convenience store in Barangay Inayawan.
The incident started when a store cashier noticed the woman acting suspiciously. She immediately alerted the security guard, who stopped the woman before she could leave the store. Upon checking her bag, they found four packs of powdered milk worth around P800.
The woman, who has no job or steady source of income, was brought to the police station for further investigation. the lola tearfully explained that she had no intention of stealing but simply did not have enough money.
The senior citizen admitted that desperation pushed her to take the milk. Her family is struggling, and she felt she had no other choice. The police confirmed her explanation and are currently coordinating with the store’s management to determine whether charges will be filed.
Some internet users expressed sympathy for the elderly woman’s condition, while others pointed out the need to follow the law regardless of the circumstances.

Authorities reminded the public that theft is still a crime, but they also acknowledged the deeper issue of poverty that often leads people to commit such acts. As of this, the old lady remains in police custody while officials wait for the store’s final decision.
The social media users expressed their reactions to the incident:

Yesterday only. A mid 49 y/o woman was caughr stealing dry goods at a store at was chased by security guard and caught outside the vicinity. Was brought to jail and to my surprise, commander of said station said there was a new policy. Security guard must secure work permit that he works for the store. Supervisor must also provide work permit. And if store is a corporation, all signatures muat be gathered and written as affidavit for the process of inquest to continue or they will just set shoplifter free after 12 hours. Where in 12 hours can we gather all these paperworks? Is this true?
