Jinggoy Estrada Grills CIDG Chief Torre Over Duterte’s Controversial Arrest

Jinggoy Estrada Challenges CIDG Chief Torre on Duterte’s Arrest Handling

JINGGOY ESTRADA – Senator Jinggoy Estrada fiercely questioned CIDG Chief Torre over the controversial arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada recently voiced concerns over the way former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on March 11 at Villamor Air Base. The operation, led by PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director Police Brigadier General Nicolas Torre III, raised questions about the treatment of the former leader.

During a Senate hearing, Estrada criticized Torre’s handling of the situation, particularly his remark, “Hihilahin ko ‘yan! Hihilahin ko ‘yan!” (I will drag him! I will drag him!). Estrada found this statement disrespectful towards Duterte. However, Torre clarified that his comment was actually directed at Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, not Duterte, and assured that the arrest followed proper protocol.

Estrada also questioned why Vice President Sara Duterte was not allowed entry to the base despite her father’s request for her presence. He argued that, as Duterte’s daughter and a lawyer, she should have been permitted access, especially since Duterte had not yet been formally arrested at the time.

Senator Imee Marcos backed Estrada’s concerns, pointing out that Philippine law allows direct family members to visit a person in custody. She and Estrada emphasized that Duterte, as a former president, should have received the same rights and consideration.

Reflecting on his own past arrest, Estrada acknowledged the emotional toll of such an experience. He insisted that Duterte, given his status and age, should have been treated with greater respect and courtesy.

The hearing concluded with Estrada urging the PNP to reassess their protocols for handling the arrests of high-profile individuals, stressing the need to uphold dignity and respect in legal proceedings.
