Authorities Arrest Man for Holding His Own Sibling Hostage in Recto
A 30-year-old man was arrested in Tondo, Manila, after taking his own younger sibling hostage along C.M. Recto Avenue.
On the afternoon of Monday, March 17, 2025, a bystander captured a video showing the suspect gripping his brother’s shorts while pointing a knife at him. The younger brother appeared to be explaining something to his older sibling during the tense moment.
According to the Moriones-Tondo Police, the two brothers had an argument that escalated into a hostage situation. The suspect wanted his younger brother to take him to Quiapo to visit their uncle, but when the younger sibling refused, the suspect pulled him and the situation worsened.
Officers confirmed that the suspect was carrying a knife during the incident. The hostage-taking lasted for 30 minutes while authorities tried to negotiate with the suspect. He eventually surrendered after his request to see his mother was granted.
Reports indicate that during the standoff, the suspect dragged his brother into a narrow alley and into a house. Negotiators worked to de-escalate the situation, and the suspect agreed to surrender once he was allowed to see his mother.
Thankfully, no one was harmed, and the younger brother was safely released. Further investigations revealed that the suspect had a history of imprisonment for other offenses, including illegal drug use.
The suspect later expressed regret for his actions, admitting that he was struggling with family problems. He apologized to his mother and siblings, saying he never intended for things to turn out that way.
“Humihingi po ako ng pasensya sa mga kapatid ko pati na sa Nanay ko. Na nagawa ko iyon,” the suspect explained.
He is now in the custody of the Moriones-Tondo Police Station and faces multiple charges, including grave coercion, grave threat, alarms and scandals, and possession of a bladed weapon.
