Aly, the 28-year-old woman known as the “Englishera girl,” has addressed the backlash she faced after a clip from her appearance on the dating show Pusuan o Laruan went viral. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, March 12, Aly defended her comments, insisting that there was “nothing wrong” with what she said during the show.
Aly gained attention after an edited video from her segment with Marion Aunor spread online. In the show, contestants signal disinterest in a potential match by popping balloons.
Aly popped her balloon after Ian, a school instructor, introduced himself and mentioned his red flags in Filipino. Explaining her decision, Aly said, “I’m an Englishera… halata. Baka ma-overwhelm ka sa’kin, at baka ma-overwhelm din ako sa’yo ‘pag straight Tagalog.” The clip sparked criticism from netizens who accused Aly of rejecting Ian due to his use of Filipino language.
Describing the aftermath as the “worst experience” of her life, Aly revealed that the backlash included hate messages, memes, sound bites, and even death threats. “I didn’t do anything wrong, and yet I was attacked by tens of thousands of people,” she said, adding that the experience left her fearful of being recognized in public.
Aly clarified that her decision to reject Ian was not meant as an insult but was based on personal preference. “It was just a preference, not a dealbreaker,” she explained. “In fact, I became friends with Ian after the show.” She also defended her use of mixed English and Tagalog, noting, “It’s a Filipino show, and I was adjusting.”
Despite the negativity, Aly expressed gratitude to those who supported her. “I am blessed with good people. Even those I barely know, including creators and celebrities I admire, defended me,” she said.
Aly ended her statement with a message of understanding and forgiveness. “We all have our preferences, and I forgive you. I wish you peace.”
