Man Arrested After Having an Alleged Gunfight w/ Police Officers in Caloocan
A man was arrested in Barangay 150, Caloocan after he reportedly got into a gunfight with police officers.
The suspect, who admitted to carrying a firearm, denied that he fired any shots. However, CCTV footage from the area showed the man standing near his motorcycle before running behind a taxi and pulling out a gun.
Multiple gunshots followed, and moments later, the suspect was seen lying on the ground, reportedly injured in a confrontation with a police intelligence officer. The incident happened just an hour after gunshots were fired in celebration of the New Year.
According to Police Captain Mikko Arellano of the Bagong Barrio Police Station, the suspect had allegedly threatened to abduct and kill the police officer, who was in civilian clothes at the time.
Despite being in civilian attire, the officer approached the suspect, only to be met with gunfire. The officer then returned fire, hitting the suspect in the right leg.
Though wounded, the suspect managed to escape the scene. Police followed the blood trail to a nearby house where they found the suspect’s firearm and a grenade. The gun was loaded, and the grenade was armed when recovered.
“Nang sinundan natin ‘yung blood trailings sa lugar, pumasok siya sa isang bahay. Pagkatapos noon, nakita natin nandoon din sa crime scene ang kaniyang baril na ginamit at isang granada,” Arellano said.
Despite the evidence, the suspect denied shooting at the police. He claimed he ran after seeing the officer approach but never fired any shots.
Authorities later revealed that the suspect had a criminal background, having previously been arrested for murder, and was reportedly involved in illegal activities, including gun running and drug dealing.
The suspect is now facing charges of attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal possession of explosives as authorities investigate further into his motive.
