Chiz Escudero Calls on Senators to Stay Silent on Sara Duterte Impeachment
CHIZ ESCUDERO – Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero called on his fellow senators to refrain from making any public remarks regarding the impeachment complaint filed against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Chiz Escudero has called on his fellow senators to exercise caution and avoid making public statements regarding the impeachment complaint filed against Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a statement released Monday, Escudero emphasized the importance of maintaining impartiality and upholding public trust should the Senate be required to act as an impeachment court. “I reiterate my call to my colleagues in the Senate to refrain from making any public comments or statements regarding the allegations in the complaint’s articles of impeachment,” he stated.
Based on a report from Inquirer, Chiz Escudero stressed that any public perception of bias or pre-judgment could undermine the integrity of the impeachment process and diminish public confidence in the Senate as an institution. He further noted that the Senate stands prepared to fulfill its constitutional duties with integrity, objectivity, and fairness.
“This is what justice requires. This is what our people demand,” Escudero said, underscoring the Senate’s responsibility to adhere to the rule of law and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.
The impeachment process was set in motion on Monday afternoon when civil society organizations filed a 50-page complaint against Vice President Duterte at the House of Representatives’ Office of the Secretary General. Akbayan Party-list Representative Percival Cendaña formally endorsed the complaint, marking the initial step in what could become a significant political proceeding.
Escudero acknowledged that the endorsement of an impeachment complaint by the House signifies the start of a critical process designed to ensure accountability among the nation’s highest officials.
He assured the public that the Senate is ready to handle the potential impeachment trial with the utmost integrity, emphasizing that senators must view the political exercise with impartiality and objectivity.
“The Senate stands ready to fulfill its constitutional mandate with integrity and impartiality while upholding the national interest,” Escudero concluded.
According to the report, the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte, if it advances in the House of Representatives, could place the Senate at the center of a high-profile political and legal battle, testing its ability to maintain public confidence and impartiality.
