Police Authorities Arrest 5 Individuals Over Involvement in ‘Rentangay’ Scam in Quezon City
Five individuals, including four women and one man, were arrested in Quezon City for allegedly carrying out the “rentangay” scam.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon (October 16, 2024) in Novaliches, Quezon City, after the group reportedly took off with an SUV.
According to the Quezon City Police District – Station 4, one of the suspects introduced themselves to the owner of the SUV as an agent of a car mortgage service. They told the victim that they were interested in renting the vehicle.
The conversation between the suspects and the victim took place in a parking lot in Barangay Sta. Monica. In addition to the person posing as an agent, there were six other accomplices. Two of the suspects attempted to start the SUV while the victim was talking to the other five.
The suspects convinced the victim to let them test the vehicle’s engine for a short distance. However, the victim became alarmed when the suspects began driving the car away. As the victim turned around, the remaining suspects quickly jumped into the vehicle, and the group sped off. The victim’s companion chased after them.
The police conducted a follow-up operation and caught the fleeing suspects at the same location. They were immediately brought to the Quezon City Police District – Station 4. Two other suspects, who escaped with the vehicle, are still being hunted by the authorities.

Police are investigating where the suspects may have taken the stolen SUV. The five arrested suspects now face charges under the New Anti-Carnapping Law, and it was later revealed that they had previous cases of carnapping and estafa.
The police have advised vehicle owners to be cautious in transactions, ensuring they verify the identity of those they deal with and requesting valid IDs, as well as using GPS devices on their cars for added security.
