Unidentified Robbers Stole P1.3 Million from Grocery Store in Iloilo
Unidentified robbers managed to steal P1.3 million from a grocery store in Iloilo City, leaving the netizens shocked.
The robbery incident, which took place at an Iloilo Supermart branch in Barangay Tabuc Suba, Jaro on Tuesday (August 27, 2024), has left both the community and the authorities baffled.
The crime was discovered when a staff member realized that the cash was missing from its storage. Upon investigating, the Jaro Police found evidence of a break-in including footprints and holes in the concrete floor and walls.
The investigation revealed that the thieves had dug a tunnel leading from a large drainage system to the store’s former entrance. In addition to the stolen cash, the police recovered several tools at the scene, including crowbars, a metal saw, and a styrofoam ice chest. The suspects are believed to have used these tools to carry out their plan.
Surveillance footage showed three men entering the store’s office around 1:05 a.m. on Tuesday. However, the exact timing is still under review as security personnel could not confirm the footage’s timestamp.
The police estimate that the tunnel, which was over five meters long and wide enough for a person to crawl through, might have taken two to three weeks to complete.
Authorities suspect the thieves spent several days surveying the store to plan the robbery. This type of operation is similar of the “termite gangs” known for using similar methods to rob banks and other establishments.
The police have yet to identify any suspects or persons of interest, and the investigation is ongoing. They are also considering whether this group could be linked to another robbery in San Carlos City, though no connections have been confirmed so far.
