Robin Padilla Defends His Controversial Question

This is what Robin Padilla said following the backlash his question received.

Senator Robin Padilla defends his controversial question to lawyer Lorna Kapunan and apologized to those who did not like it.

Recently, Senator Robin Padilla was a viral topic on social media recently because of his question during a hearing at the Senate. He was heard insisting his belief about the rights of a man over his wife while he asked resource person Atty. Lorna Kapunan about the matter seeking for possible options.

In a previous article, in the discussion connected to Senator Padilla’s question about marital consent, he said, “So paano ‘yun kung ayaw ng asawa mo? So wala pong ibang paraan talaga? Para ma-ano ‘yung lalaki, so paano ‘yun, mambabae ka na lang ba?”

Atty. Kapunan graciously responded saying that no means no and that something such as this be forced could affect trust in marriage and may become a ground for annulment. The deed is normally done by the married couple but there’s must be respect which applies to both gender.

With the backlash his question received, the senator finally addressed it and apologized to those who did not like it. Along with his apology, he defended his question citing the lack of opportunity for matters like this to be discussed.

Such a chance was a window of opportunity for him to ignite a discussion about it not just for his own knowledge but also for the knowledge of the public. Legal topics connected to this was also mentioned as he would want to relay it to the people as laws are the people’s protection.

“Wag po tayo maging sensitive sa pagdinig sapagkat yun po ang ibig sabihin ng hearing,” he quipped.

Meanwhile, women’s group Gabriela reacted to the controversial remarks saying those “perpetuates machismo” and “blatantly disregards women’s autonomy and rights”. Such a question casting doubt to women’s rights about their body is a “glaring example of the deeply rooted machismo that continues to plague our society”.
