Animal King Foundation Rescues Abandoned Dogs Pagadian City Island
An island in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur allegedly become unfortunate dumping ground for abandoned dogs.
Recently, the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) rescued around 20 emaciated dogs from this island, which had been left to fend for themselves.
On August 1, AKF managed to reach Dao Dao Island after several days of coordinating with local government units and contacts in Pagadian City. The rescue mission revealed a heartbreaking scene: the dogs were severely malnourished, yet they remained surprisingly friendly and allowed the rescue team to interact with them.
“When we visited the island yesterday to install signages, we were surprised to see that there were still dogs around, a total of SIX (6). We made sure that NO ANIMALS ARE LEFT BEHIND so our team went back today to rescue the remaining dogs. THEY ARE ALL SAFE NOW,” AKF said.
The barangay captain admitted that the island had become a dumping site for abandoned dogs after losing its caretaker. Some of the dogs had begun eating chicks and eggs, which the locals used as a reason for abandoning them on the island.
AKF, along with their local animal welfare partners, has taken the rescued dogs into their care. They have also put up warning signs on the island with the help of the local Philippine National Police, barangay officials, and animal welfare advocates.
These signs serve as a reminder that abandoning animals is illegal under the Animal Welfare Act, which carries penalties including imprisonment.
In addition to the rescue efforts, AKF plans to launch an educational campaign in the nearby barangays. This initiative aims to teach residents about proper animal care and prevent similar situations in the future.
The goal is to ensure that animals are treated with the respect and care they deserve, and to discourage the abandonment of pets.
