Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Surigao del Sur, August 3, 2024
EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 6.8 magnitude quake in Surigao del Sur, August 3, 2024. Here are the details.
Following the 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Davao Oriental yesterday, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake recently hit Surigao del Sur and it has a magnitude of 6.8.
The earthquake that struck Surigao del Sur, Saturday, August 3, 2024, was tectonic in origin. A tectonic quake is a shaking which is a product when the Earth’s crust breaks because of the geological forces on the rocks and the adjoining plates which result to chemical and physical changes.
According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Surigao del Sur was located at 08.10°North, 127.01°East – 066 km North 85° East of Lingig. It had a depth of focus of 009 kilometers.
Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake but there may be aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were felt in these areas:
