84-Year-Old Grandma Expresses Determination to Become a Licensed CPA

An 84-year-old grandma who took the Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination (CPALE) in May 2024 inspired netizens.

On May 27, 2024, a netizen named Dez Francisco shared a video of an elderly woman named Filipina Adele Balite, who was seen carrying a plastic envelope with pencils and a calculator. Dez was at the exam location to support friends who were also taking the CPALE.

Dez decided to share Lola Filipina’s story on social media, expressing admiration for her dedication to her dream of becoming an accountant.

“Sobrang na-inspire po kasi ako nung nakita ko si lola. Despite her age, patuloy pa rin siya sa pangarap niya maging CPA. Kaya grabe saludo talaga,” Francisco said.

The grandma shared that she first took the board exam in 1982. She did not pass at that time and never had the chance to retake it. She worked as a bookkeeper for several years, temporarily setting aside her dream of becoming a CPA.

However, at the age of 84, she decided to take another chance on her dream.

“Inalok ako nila ng scholarship, tinanggap ko. At least, miski papano matutupad ko sana yung pangarap ko, miski matanda na ako… Maraming nagbibigay sakin ng reading materials, libre, hindi naman nagpapakilala kung sino sila, basta nilalagay na lang dun sa upuan ko,” said Lola Filipina.

Balite also mentioned feeling the support of her peers at the review center, which motivated her to study even harder. Although she did not pass the board exam on her second attempt, Lola Filipina did not lose hope. Instead, she is determined to try again.

For her next attempt, she carries the mission in her heart, believing that perhaps God has a plan for her. “If you cannot make it, go ahead. Kuha ulit. Dapat tuloy lang,” she added.
