Jeepney Driver Punched by Protester for Declining to Join Rally in Bacolod City
A jeepney driver in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental was assaulted after refusing to join a rally protest.
A transport protest is a public demonstration or strike organized by workers in the transportation sector, such as bus drivers, taxi drivers, train operators, or other transport employees.
These protests are typically aimed at addressing grievances related to working conditions, wages, job security, or changes in transportation policies and regulations. They are a common way for individuals or groups to voice their dissatisfaction or support for a cause, policy, or event.
Transport workers may gather in public spaces to voice their demands, often carrying signs and chanting slogans. Drivers may deliberately drive slowly to disrupt traffic and draw attention to their cause.
In previous years, jeepney drivers have protested against the government’s jeepney modernization program, which they fear will lead to job losses and increased costs.
Recently, a jeepney driver was allegedly punched by a rallyist after declining to join a protest. The incident happened at the Old Airport in Barangay Singcang, where a group of jeepney drivers was protesting against the jeepney phase-out.
According to PMAJ Eugene Tolentino, the rally began peacefully. However, things escalated when a jeepney driver, who operates the Punta Taytay-Central Market route, was confronted by the protesting drivers.
The protesters reportedly tried to force the jeepney driver to join their rally. When the driver refused, the situation turned violent, and he was punched by one of the protesters.
The involved drivers were taken to the police station following the incident for further investigation.
