Counterflowing Rider Dies After Colliding with Another Vehicle on Skyway Stage 3

A motorcycle rider tragically lost his life after colliding with a vehicle while counterflowing on Skyway Stage 3.

The victim, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was also in violation of expressway regulations by riding a motorcycle not permitted on the expressway.

The collision between a motorist counterflowing and an oncoming vehicle on Skyway Stage 3, located in Balintawak, Quezon City, resulted in the rider’s demise. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

According to the statement released by Skyway authorities, the motorcycle entered the expressway from A. Bonifacio Avenue and proceeded up the off-ramp of the Skyway Northbound, heading towards the North Luzon Expressway.

Despite attempts by expressway guards to stop the rider, the rider did not halt and was speeding. In addition to riding a motorcycle not allowed on the Skyway, which is limited to motorcycles with engine capacities of 150cc and above, the rider was reportedly traveling at 80kph, exceeding the designated speed limit of 60kph.

Moments later, the rider was thrown off the motorcycle due to the strong impact of the oncoming vehicle. It was revealed that the rider had been drinking and was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to injuries after 12 hours.

Nakita po natin na wala po siyang helmet na gamit during that time, allegedly an gating driver wala pong lisensya,” stated HPG-SLEX-Sub-Office Chief P/Capt. Jun Cornelio Estrellan.

The driver of the vehicle, despite being in the right of way, is still facing complaints filed by the HPG with the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office. However, the rider’s family has submitted an affidavit of resistance against the prosecutor.

Authorities emphasize that only motorcycles with engine capacities of 400cc and above are allowed on expressways, and the motorcycle used by the rider did not meet the criteria. If the rider hadn’t been involved in the accident and had been caught, they would have faced numerous charges.

“Sa expressway po meron po tayong specification diyan na dapat ang motor lang dapat dyan ay 400cc above, so yung ating rider nakita naman natin ng Raider 150cc lang hindi po siya allowed pati yung ginawa counter hindi talaga siya allowed,” he added.
