Student Partied for Four Days Unaware of Stray Bullet in His Head

A Brazilian student was unaware of a stray bullet inside his head and continued to party for four days before realizing his condition.

Mateus Facio, a 21-year-old from Cabo Frio, Brazil, unknowingly survived a gunshot to the head during a New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 2023, and continued to party for four days before learning the seriousness of his condition.

Mateus heard a loud noise and felt a sudden impact on his head, initially thinking it was a rock thrown amidst the celebration. Experiencing intense pain, he discovered he was bleeding from the head.

Fortunately, a doctor at the party provided immediate first aid, stopping the bleeding and allowing Mateus to continue the festivities. Assuming it was a minor injury caused by a thrown object, he simply applied ice to ease the pain and carried on with the New Year celebrations alongside friends.

The following day included more partying and even swimming, all while Mateus remained unaware of the bullet lodged in his head. On January 4, 2024, the student began feeling something was wrong.

The young man woke up with weakness in his left hand and noticed a lack of coordination in his movements. Fearing the worst, he went to a nearby hospital, where a CT scan revealed a bullet lodged in his head from a 9mm caliber gun.

Facio and his family were informed that the bullet needed to be surgically removed to prevent serious complications. Surgeons successfully extracted the bullet after a two-hour operation, preventing potential brain bleeding and fluid leakage.

His survival story made headlines on the Brazilian TV show Jornal Nacional on January 21. Despite the risks involved, the operation’s success now allows Mateus to return to his normal activities after a month of recovery.
