Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Masbate, January 8, 2024

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.0 magnitude quake in Masbate today, Monday, January 8, 2024.

Following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake hit Masbate today and it had a magnitude of 4.0.

Earthquake Today

The earthquake today that struck Masbate, Monday, January 8, 2023, at 10:27 a.m., was tectonic in origin.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Masbate was located at 12.51°North, 123.71°East – 006 km North 65° West of San Fernando. It had a depth of focus of 079 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, Intensity IV was felt in Masbate City while the following instrumental intensities were recorded:

    • Legazpi City, Albay
    • Bulusan, Sorsogon
  • Intensity III
    • Monreal and Batuan, Masbate
  • Intensity IV
    • Masbate City, Masbate
