Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Surigao del Sur, January 3, 2024

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.1 magnitude quake in Surigao del Sur today, Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Following the 4.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Sarangani a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another area. According to the agency, the quake that hit Surigao del Sur today had a magnitude of 5.1.

The earthquake today that struck Surigao del Sur, Wednesday, January 3, 2024, was tectonic in origin.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Surigao del Sur was located at 08.31°North, 126.63°East – 032 km South 79° East of Hinatuan. It had a depth of focus of 025 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were felt in these areas:

Intensity II

  • Tagbina, Lianga, Bayabas, and Cagwait, SURIGAO DEL SUR

Intensity III

  • City of Tandag and Lingig, SURIGAO DEL SUR

Intensity V

  • City of Bislig and Hinatuan, SURIGAO DEL SUR
