Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Cagayan, December 6, 2023

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.3 magnitude quake in Cagayan today, Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

Following the 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur early today, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in the area. According to the agency, the quake that hit Cagayan this afternoon had a magnitude of 5.3.

The earthquake today that struck Cagayan, Wednesday, December 6, 2023, was tectonic in origin.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Cagayan was located at 19.17°North, 121.21°East – 007 km North 03° East of Dalupiri Island. It had a depth of focus of 010 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake but there may be aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were recorded in these areas:

Intensity I

  • Peñablanca and Gonzaga, Cagayan
  • Laoag City, Ilocos Norte

Intensity II

  • Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte
  • Candon, Ilocos Sur
  • Aparri, Cagayan
