Food Poisoning Outbreak Hits Wedding in Bukidnon
147 individuals have reportedly fallen victim to food poisoning during a wedding ceremony held in Talakag, Bukidnon.
Among the victims is the bride herself, as attendees complained of stomachaches, and some even required hospitalization in neighboring towns after losing consciousness.
According to Dr. Mark Anthony Dano of the Talakag Municipal Health Office, the symptoms, including vomiting and stomach pain, suggest contamination by Staphylococcus bacteria. The toxin release is likely attributed to food preparation under warm conditions, occurring approximately 15 hours before serving.
Out of the 147 cases, 35 are residents of Talakag, where the wedding took place, while over 100 individuals are from the town of Lantapan, where the food was cooked.
The victims were served a meal consisting of rice, pancit (noodles), and chicken adobo. By four o’clock, their stomachs began to ache severely, leading to intense vomiting and diarrhea, as shared by a relative of one of the affected guests.
“Binigyan sila ng kanin, pancit at adobong manok. Pagsapit ng alas kuwatro sumakit na ang kanilang tiyan, grabe pagsusuka at pagdudumi,” the victim’s relative said.
Unfortunately, even the bride herself succumbed to food poisoning, emphasizing the severity of the outbreak.
The Talakag Municipal Health Office is currently examining samples taken from the prepared food at the wedding to determine if it was indeed the source of the guests’ illnesses. The investigation aims to identify and correct the lapses in food handling and preparation that led to this unfortunate incident.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict food safety measures, especially during celebrations where large gatherings partake in communal meals.
