Tawag Ng Tanghalan Defending Champ Receives “Rare” Gong

This defending champion in Tawag Ng Tanghalan has received this which surprised a lot.

On the November 7, 2023, episode of Tawag Ng Tanghalan of It’s Showtime, a defending champion met a heartbreaking fate.

General Santos’ Lyka Estrella is ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ 6 grand winner. The last grand finals was held last May and Estella emerged as the grand winner. She performed her rendition of the Basil Valdez classic “Ngayon at Kailanman” and Aerosmith’s “Dream On”.

She scored 98.9%.

TNT is a popular singing competition which already produced a lot of singers. Foremost of whom was Nora Aunor who won this contest in 1967. What is unique about this contest is that it has a gong ready to be banged anytime the singer commits mistakes in singing or becomes out of tune.

And just recently, despite being the defending champion, the contestant from Mindanao named John Vergel got eliminated after receiving the gong while performing. This is a very rare moment in the competition.

This gong has been the fear of many TNT contestants and aspirants until now.

This was during the November 7 episode of It’s Showtime. He sang Bandang Lapis’ “Kabilang Buhay” song. However, in several parts of the song, he did not hit the notes and this was noticed by Punong Hurado Louie Ocampo.

The part where he’s out of tune did not skip the ears of the veteran musician making him fail to defend his title and extend his winning streak.

The contestants were actually given three chances. They will not be gonged the first time they commit a mistake but once they commit three strikes, it will result in immediate elimination.

Luzon’s Gerald Ponce, the daily winner, automatically becomes the new defending champion.

“I love the heart. Yung puso mo. It was there. Unfortunately, may mga sablay. You were not hitting the notes. I don’t know what happened but you know I was rooting, I was enjoying it. I don’t know if you’re just nervous today. I love the rawness of your singing but unfortunately, you weren’t hitting the notes. So, good luck. Try again,” says the Punong Hurado based on the video.
