Hidilyn Diaz Falls Short and Lands in the 4th Place of Asian Games Weightlifting

Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz fails to bag gold medal in Asian Games 2023 after falling to 4th place of weightlifting competition.

Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, the weightlifter from the Philippines, missed out on a medal by finishing in fourth place in the 59-kilogram division at the 19th Asian Games held in Xiaoshan Sports Center Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China. The category was dominated by Ilgyong Kim, a 20-year-old athlete from the Korea.

During the competition, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist initially succeeded in lifts of 94 and 97 kilograms but faltered in her attempt at 100 kilograms in the snatch, ultimately securing a fourth-place finish with a lift of 97 kilograms. The 33-year-old Diaz-Naranjo then managed lifts of 121 and 126 kilograms in the clean and jerk but fell short when attempting 131 kilograms in her bid to overtake the third-place finisher.

Unfortunately, her final attempt was unsuccessful. Diaz-Naranjo equaled her personal best of 97 kilograms in the snatch, a feat she achieved at the World Championships in Riyadh.

Her lift of 126 kilograms in the clean and jerk was slightly below her previous record of 127 kilograms. Her total lift of 223 kilograms fell short of her personal best of 224 kilograms, which is the current Olympic record.

On the other hand, the 20-year-old Kim delivered an outstanding performance by setting new records. She achieved 103, 107, and 111 kilograms in the snatch, breaking the Junior World record, Asian Games record, and Junior Asian record.

In the clean and jerk, Kim lifted 127, 132, and 135 kilograms, establishing new records for the Junior World and Junior Asian categories. His total lift of 246 kilograms also set new records at the World, Asian, and Asian Games levels. Shifang Lou from China also made a noteworthy performance by breaking the Asian Games record, based on the report of ABS-CBN News.

She lifted 100, 104, and 107 kilograms in the snatch and 128 and 133 kilograms in the clean and jerk, achieving a total lift of 240 kilograms, earning him the silver medal.  The bronze medal went to Hsing Chun Kuo of Chinese Taipei, who recorded lifts of 101 kilograms in the snatch and 126 kilograms in the clean and jerk, resulting in a total lift of 227 kilograms.
