Gilas Pilipinas Women Jumps to No. 37 in World Rankings

Philippine women basketball team ‘Gilas Pilipinas Women’ climbs up to No 37 in the FIBA Basketball World Rankings.

According to the International Basketball Federation or FIBA, the Philippines is now rated 37^th in the FIBA World Rankings, which was updated August 21st but was made public on Wednesday. The Philippine team has accumulated a total of 203.3 points, according to FIBA’s assessment.

This ranking follows the performance of the Gilas women’s team, which secured a sixth-place finish in the 2023 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup. During the tournament, they achieved a historic victory over Chinese Taipei, marking their first-ever win in the group stage.

According to ABS-CBN News article, within the Asian context, the Philippine team holds the seventh position. They are positioned behind the following Asian countries: China at No. 2, Australia at No. 3, Japan at No. 9, Korea at No. 13, New Zealand at No. 23, and Chinese Taipei at No. 33. This higher ranking comes just a few weeks before the commencement of the Asian Games.

At the global level, the United States maintains its top-ranking position with an impressive 834.6 points, placing them comfortably ahead of China, which stands at No. 2 with 687.1 points. FIBA also noted significant progress made by several nations, including Belgium, Brazil, Nigeria, and Mali, in the latest edition of the rankings.

Within Asia, notable movements include Thailand’s ascent by 39 places to reach No. 62, and Iran’s improvement by 26 places to attain No. 52 after reaching the title game of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division B tournament. Looking ahead, the Gilas women’s team has upcoming matches against Kazakhstan on September 27, Hong Kong on September 29, and Japan on October 1.
