On September 5, 2023 (Tuesday), Bureau of Immigration (BI) officials apprehended a Filipina, identified as Josephine, who was attempting to leave the country with a fake Belgian passport. The incident takes place at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1.
Josephine reportedly presented a Belgian passport to an immigration officer. The officer found inconsistencies with her statements, prompting the officer to refer her for a secondary inspection supervised by the Duty Supervisor.
The Filipina’s documents underwent forensic screening, and the truth revealed that her passport, residence card, and immigration stamps were all forged. The female victim of trafficking is supposed to fly to Ercan, Cyprus.
Prior to the incident, Josephine had previously been deported from Israel for working without a valid visa. It was during her time in Israel that she saw a TikTok video advertising EU passports promising “travel visa-free” to various countries.
The hopeful woman spent ₱700,000 in exchange for the fake documents and the promise of a high-paying caregiving job in Greece. The job opportunity allegedly offers P180, 000 per month.
Following her apprehension, Josephine was turned over to the Inter-Agency Council against trafficking (IACAT). This step is crucial in providing her with assistance and support while ensuring that her recruiters face legal consequences for their actions.
The aspiring OFW’s pursuit of a better life ultimately led her down a treacherous path filled with deception, exploitation, and the possibility of criminal charges.
