Woman Fatally Stung by Box Jellyfish While Swimming Passed Away

A woman passed away after she was fatally stung by a box jellyfish while swimming in Bantayan Island, Cebu.

Tragedy struck on the shores of Bantayan Island in Cebu as a woman lost her life after being stung by a box jellyfish while swimming at the beach in Sta. Fe. The victim was identified as Leslie Ann Madronero, a 31-year-old woman from Valencia, Bohol.

The incident was confirmed by Sta. Fe’s mayor, Ithamar Espinosa, through a post on his social media page.

According to local authorities, the victim was enjoying a swim at the beach with her friends on Sunday when the incident occurred. The local government has assured financial assistance to the victim’s family during this difficult time.

They have also advised visitors to exercise caution when swimming in beaches known to have jellyfish.

Allan Poquita, the regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 7, stated that jellyfish sightings are common during the summer season.

“Kung summertime, mataas talaga ang temperature, lumalabas talaga sila. Hindi naman ‘yon ang makapag-trigger ng sakit sa mga dadaanan, halimbawa, high blood ang isang tao, ‘yon ang puwedeng makapag-trigger,” explained Poquita.

He further advised that jellyfish stings can be alleviated by using oil, such as baby oil. “Puwedeng baby oil, used oil or cooking oil? Oo, puwede kahit coconut oil or sunblock kasi oily na ‘yon,” he added.

Jellyfish, although beautiful creatures, can pose a threat to swimmers if not approached with caution. Their stings can cause severe pain and, in rare cases, lead to fatal consequences.

  1. box jellyfish is the most venomous marine animal. if you get stung with the venom, it will kill you in 5 minutes. forget the coconut oil you won’t make it back home.
