7-Year-Old Boy Passes Away After Box Jellyfish Sting in Masbate

A 7-year-old boy has passed away after being stung by a box jellyfish while swimming at a beach in San Pascual, Masbate.

The young kid was just swimming in a coastal area in San Pascual, Masbate when he accidentally hits a box jellyfish gathering at the shoreline. The victim was able to return to the shore but suddenly collapsed.

The victim’s family rushed the kid to the nearest hospital but the health personnel declared him dead on arrival.

According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – Bicol, box jellyfish usually moves into the shallow water during summer or hot season. ‘Dikya” contains venomous tentacles, which cause harm to the victims.

Most victims were young children. BFAR also advised the public to take precautionary measures when swimming on public beaches. According to a safety expert, victims should pour vinegar into the wounds. Vinegar can stop the toxins from jellyfish.

However, it contains stinging cells to subdue their prey, which can also injure humans. Its sting can cause from mild discomfort to serious injury or even death to the victims.
