On Friday afternoon, detainees protested alleged maltreatment by the facility’s warden and other staff in the male dorm of the aforementioned institution. According to Chief Inspector Major Jayrex Bustinera, spokesperson for the BJMP, the disturbance was triggered by the transfer of two detainees to the Bicutan Jail, which was opposed by the inmates.

Photos and videos were published on social media, including one from Malabon Vice Mayor Bernard dela Cruz, in which detainees were seen hurling what appeared to be paper as the Vice Mayor attempted to speak with them.  They also requested food from dela Cruz, who in turn requested that the captives remove themselves from the building’s walls and gates.

The alleged jail warden has been suspended, according to Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval. Despite the incident, Sandoval stated that the city’s peace and order are stable.

Sandoval urged people to stay watchful and support efforts to promote basic human rights for all, including those in detention. The situation in jail has now returned to normal, and the BJMP has informed the public that they would be transparent about the problem and punish those found to be at blame.
