Richard Gomez Backs Filing Charges vs Palompon Mayor and His Wife
Leyte representative Richard Gomez urges the House Committee on Natural Resources to file charges against Palompon Mayor and his wife.
The Leyte Representative requested the House Committee on Natural Resources to file a criminal and administrative complaint with the Ombudsman’s Office against Palompon Mayor Ramon Oate and his wife Lourdes. This pertains to their suspected infringement of environmental regulations.
In addition to the Oñate couple, Gomez stated that the complaint should include Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) officials in the region who are not involved in the infractions. Gomez suggests that, in the case of certain infractions, the Committee prepares a report and a conclusion that will be filed with the Ombudsman.
According to Gomez’s House Resolution 778, the House committee investigated alleged violations of land use and environmental management rules in the towns of Palompon and Albuera. Based on the report, Gomez represents Leyte’s fourth district, which encompasses Palompon and Albuera.
The pollution, according to Gomez, is caused by DBSN Farms Agriventures Corp., which operates in two municipalities. The congressman stated that Mayor Oate is the president and CEO of DBSN, which has a 55,000-capacity chicken dressing plant in Albuera and an 88,000-chicken breeder farm in Palompon.
According to Gomez, the sewage from the DBSN dressing plant ends up in Ormoc Bay, while the solid waste from the Albuera plant is placed within the Palompon Watershed and Forest Reserve. According to Gomez, the DENR should revoke DBSN’s Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) and punish the company.
The congressman also requested that DENR Secretary Toni Yulo-Loyzaga relocate the personnel of DENR Region 8 to another location. Gomez, on the other side, requested that the Land Bank of the Philippines evaluate the Oate couple’s P50 million debt.
