Students Affected by Mayon Volcano Displacement Meet Under Trees

Innovative Learning for Students Continues Amidst Mayon Volcano Displacement

The students affected by Mayon Volcano displacement have meet under the trees as schools turned into shelters for villagers.

As the majestic Mayon Volcano continues to wreak havoc in the province of Albay, a unique educational situation has emerged, where over 17,000 students in five affected towns find themselves displaced from their regular school environments.

However, the resilient spirit of the Filipino people shines through as schools adapt and students continue their education in unconventional settings. Approximately 80% of the affected students are participating in a temporary distant-learning approach.

This emergency system relies on parents taking on the role of educators, teaching their children at home or in alternative locations using specially prepared “learning modules” provided by the schools.

Alvin Cruz, an official from the Department of Education in Albay, shared that this approach is reminiscent of the strategies employed during the challenging two-year period of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We came from the pandemic and the learning loss was grave, and now we have the Mayon volcano erupting,” Cruz told The Associated Press. “Our challenge now is how to track the displaced school children so we can give their parents the learning modules.” Cruz said.

Despite the difficulties, dedicated teachers are going above and beyond to continue providing education to their students. They have found creative ways to conduct in-person classes by utilizing various communal spaces such as village halls, chapels, gymnasiums, daycare centers, and even the outdoors.

Under the shade of trees or in the tranquil ambiance of school gardens, these educators persevere in their mission to ensure that learning continues, even amidst adversity.

We can’t do anything because we’re in an emergency,” he said. “We will always find ways to ensure the learning continuity,” he added.
