ANDREA BRILLANTES – Actress Andrea Brillantes showed the injury she suffered while playing lato-lato.
Instead of chismis, you now hear a constant clacking sound along barangay streets that sounds like fingers snapping. Fidget spinners taught us that toys with vivid colors and quick movements are sure to pique the interest of children.
But not just kids are affected. Joko Widodo, the president of Indonesia, was also seen enjoying the toy. On the Indonesian red carpet for the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantomania premiere, even Paul Rudd was requested to try the lato-lato.
The Southeast Asian lato-lato renaissance began in late 2022, but the Filipinos have only lately begun to follow the trend in the last two months. That’s true, lato-lato is not just a Filipino custom. In Western nations, they are referred to as “clackers” and “knockers.”
Latto is a Buginese term that, according to a Borneo Bulletin, means “making clacking sounds.” It’s a toy made of two plastic balls hanging on a string that, when swung, collide with one another and make a distinct clacking sound. The balls can be struck against each other above and below the hand with enough practice.
